Test Technician

This new role requires an individual to support development activities in the Mechanical and Product Design team. You would work on a number of projects in parallel, requiring as follows:

  • Conducting hands-on physical testing and fault finding at product and component level to assess reliability, function and performance
  • Identifying root causes of failures and possible solutions to problems
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Documenting test findings in formal test reports and in slideshows
  • Communicating test findings with the wider Engineering team
  • Assembling test units and building test rigs
  • Looking after and developing our test lab and workshop
  • Knowledge of safe working practices
  • Working in a multi-disciplinary development team
  • An understanding of how things are made and the different physical materials used in consumer products would be an advantage
  • Knowledge and experience of electronics and electronics assembly would be desirable as would basic electromechanical control, measurement and data acquisition systems used in testing, for example Arduino or similar
  • Hands-on workshop skills are not necessarily required but would be helpful

The role would suit somebody with experience of testing or developing consumer (or related) products comprising plastic and metal components, PCBs, electronics and mechanisms. 

Planning your workload, having initiative, working on multiple projects and being able to work with changing demands are expected requirements of this role.

Project Engineer / Support Development Engineer

This role requires an individual to support activities in the Mechanical and Product Design team. We require somebody with enthusiasm and initiative who is eager to learn, possessing the ability to work on multiple projects and able to take a methodical and structured approach on detailed tasks. An appreciation and understanding of the development processes, manufacturing techniques and materials used in consumer product development would be advantageous. Competence in Solidworks software or a similar 3D CAD package is a definite requirement.

You would be involved in a number of activities, including as follows:

  • Writing and designing user manuals, requiring:
  • An appreciation of usability and thinking from the end-user’s perspective
  • Competence with Adobe InDesign and Illustrator
  • Making hand sketches and designing icons and graphics for manual diagrams
  • A good level of English grammar and spelling
  • Seeking out regular input and feedback from the various departments within the company and integrating this into the manuals
  • Supporting mechanical product development and design activities such as:
  • Assisting in design projects for products, packaging, programmers and test equipment
  • Creating and updating engineering drawings using Solidworks CAD software
  • The creation of BOMs and drawing packs for production
  • Making computer renderings with Keyshot
  • Physically making prototypes, assembling test units and building test rigs
  • Conducting mechanical testing of products and components for reliability, function and performance
  • Documenting test findings, identify root causes of failures and design solutions and presenting feedback to the Engineering team
  • Working in a multi-disciplinary development team

The role would suit a graduate within the spectrum of Product Designer to Mechanical Engineer keen to be involved in all manner of tasks from concept through to production support, with activities related to designing, building and testing. Whilst the role is support focused, it may evolve in time to an independent design and development role. Minimum experience is 1-2 years but we will also consider fresh graduates, especially from Masters courses.

Technical Documentations Designer (Part-time 3 days p/w) 

Reporting into the Mechanical & Product Design team, in this role you will create user manuals for a number of our new Internet of Things products. Subjects covered in the manuals would include product set up, general functionality, ‘how to use’, installation and troubleshooting, amongst others. These will be presented as both text and illustrations, created in a friendly style for ease of use. The role would require:

  • Full competence with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Making hand sketches and designing icons and graphics for manual diagrams
  • A high level of English grammar and spelling
  • Attention to detail, whilst working under pressure
  • Working in a technical environment with engineers, designers and usability experts, and interacting with Customer Service and Marketing departments when required
  • Seeking regular input and feedback from the various stakeholders within the company and integrating this into the manuals
  • A drive to find out how things work and how things are used, including both physical products and apps
  • Experience in designing for print

Above all, this role requires an appreciation of usability and thinking from the end-user’s perspective in order to make our customers’ experiences of using our products straightforward and trouble-free.
